400 kilometers to the east of East Africa lies Madagascar, the imposing island of red earth discovered by the Portuguese Diego Diaz on August 10, 1500. Madagascar is separated from Africa only by the Mozambique Channel, barely 500 kilometers wide, yet most of its inhabitants arrived 2,000 to 3,000 years ago in dugout canoes from Insulindia, after crossing the entire Indian Ocean.

In 1680, in the north of Madagascar, a brotherhood of pirates singing an anthem to freedom, racial equality, gender equality, and religious tolerance established their stronghold in the city of Diego-Suarez.
