Spices are a whole palette of tastes and colors. Ideal for seasoning dishes, they are the best allies of experienced or budding cooks. In all its forms: roots, leaves, but also seeds, barks and fruits. Sometimes we even use the whole plant. But how to store spices properly is another story.

Use herbs well in the kitchen

Cinnamon, turmeric, cloves, paprika, pepper, pink berries ... the list is long. They can be found in the kitchen, sometimes even in jars wrapped in ribbons as decoration. Depending on the recipe, the quantity used varies. The Spices play an important role in the kitchen. The choice obviously depends on the dish. Some spices are versatile, and can enhance the flavor of all kinds of recipes, both sweet and savory. Some are limited to savory preparations, while others prefer sweetness. As we often say: "flavors and tastes are not debatable". Everyone has their own way of personalizing their recipe. On the other hand, only a good conservation of spices guarantees a successful seasoning.

Choosing the right jars to store spices

One of the most important rules for storing spices is to choose the right containers. Indeed, it is advisable to make sure that the lid is perfectly tight, to avoid the entry of air in the jar. Moreover, it is strongly recommended to choose glass jars rather than metal ones. However, it is important to make sure that the glass jars are preferably stored away from light to avoid that it alters the taste and appearance of the product. Sources of heat near the jar are also to be avoided. Plastic containers are also suitable for storing spices, provided, of course, that they are intended for food products.
In summary, the ideal location will be dry, cool and dark, protected from the air.

Keeping spices fresh

Proper storage will allow you, among other things, to enjoy all the virtues of turmeric, pepper or cinnamon for a long time. Avoid mixing old spices with newly purchased ones in your containers. Always make sure to pour your new spices into clean, dry containers. Moisture causes fermentation and is therefore bad for the preservation and taste of spices. On the practical side, you can label the boxes of each spice and reuse them.

Recycling jars at home

It is not necessary to buy specific jars to store your spices. Glass jam jars in good condition will do just fine. The main thing is that they should be clean and dry before use. However, you should avoid jars that still have a strong smell, such as those that have contained mustard or vinegar. The spices will tend to soak up the smell. This would spoil the flavor of the spices and dishes.
