Pesticides are harmful to the environment in general. Harmful for the flora, dangerous for the fauna, and destructive for the human health. In short, we are all concerned. But bees are the most vulnerable. The main responsible for pollination and therefore for plant reproduction are now threatened with extinction. In large part, this is because of the abusive use of pesticides, including glyphosate. What is the role of pesticides in this global threat?

Role of pesticides: they kill slowly but surely

Pesticides play a major role in the disappearance of bees. The team of the American biologist, Nancy Moran, recently published their study on the harmfulness of glyphosate on bees. The effects on colonies are just as dangerous as those of "neonicotinoids". The substance disorients the natural GPS of bees during their floral rounds. According to scientists, glyphosate disturbs the intestinal flora of bees. Generally used as a herbicide, it effectively inhibits the EPSPS enzyme in the synthesis of amino acids. Thus, bees partially lose their capacity for pollination and honey production.

A small but powerful amount

The role of pesticides, including glyphosate, in the disappearance of bees cannot be overlooked. In this study conducted by Texas researchers, it was revealed that the rate of glyphosate would amount to 5 to 10 mg per liter, in the nectar of flowers. This is enough to disrupt the intestinal flora of bees. Worse still, the pre-exposure of these foragers makes them vulnerable and therefore weak to bacterial infections. This prevents them from multiplying. 80% of a bee colony could disappear because of pesticides, leading to the disappearance of bees.

The disappearance of bees caused by their own nutrition

The bees take advantage of their floral walks to feed themselves. But their intestinal flora is obviously endangered because of the presence of pesticides on the foraged plants. Also, their immune defenses are inexorably decreasing, putting them in danger. In addition to the other vectors of extinction: pollution, climate change, Asian hornets, to which they are exposed, glyphosate will not help the situation.
