There are as many varieties of sugar as there are drinks and sweets. However, it is important to note that behind each name is a production process that is not always beneficial to health. Although it is a food with a high calorie content, sugar also contains nutrients that are essential for the proper functioning of the body. It is therefore important to distinguish between refined and unrefined sugar, in addition to the colors.

Refined sugar or unrefined cane sugar?

Sugar is a condiment obtained from sugar cane. It has been a pillar of the Mauritian economy for as long as anyone can remember. It is from the beach island that comes  the best sugar cane. There is a wide variety of sugar cane, distinguished by their flavor and color. However, it is important to know that there are two main types of sugar offered by the trade. On the one hand, refined sugar, and on the other hand, unrefined sugar. Unrefined sugar or cane sugar has retained a good part of the nutrients that make it so interesting. White or refined cane sugar has undergone a purification process that has removed its reddish color, and minerals and vitamins at the same time.

Unrefined cane sugar, better for your health

For many, sugar is synonymous with sweetness and treats. But long before sugar is processed, its initial purity gives it an inescapable nutritional wealth. As such, it contains various minerals, vitamins and trace elements. These include manganese, fluoride, zinc, copper, calcium, vitamins A and C and of course fiber. The benefits of cane sugar come directly from the sugar cane, known for its anti-infectious properties. It was already used in the past to fight against colds, sore throats and flu. It is also known to strengthen the muscles. Thus, it increases the performance and the muscular capacities in the sportsmen. The fibers it contains are also beneficial for the intestinal transit.

Refined sugar, emptied of its nutrients

After refining, sugar retains its characteristic taste. However, it is devoid of all nutrients. Since it is originally high in calories, its carbohydrate content equal to its own weight is taken into account. Unlike cane sugar, it has no nutritional qualities other than its taste.

Brown sugar, an urban legend

Underneath its unrefined sugar exterior, brown sugar hides its true colours. Despite the sweetened legends that surround it, it is indeed a refined white sugar that has been re-colored like caramel. The same is true for blond sugar. There is no doubt that neither of them is a match for cane sugar. It is preferable to opt for whole sugars. Choose cane sugar if you want to enjoy the beneficial properties of sugar, beyond its sweetness on the palate. You should not hesitate to scrutinize the labels and packaging to avoid being fooled by the color and flavor.
